The idea is that Salvador will create one concept each month, then Omar models it,, and I take the texturing, shading, lighting and compositing. This is the final image, having a great and very expresive concept from Salvador and the highly detailed model that Omar provided, I decided to experiment with the lighting approach, I wanted to pursue the Pixares style, like the one found in "ratatouille".

Important Notes:

+ You need a tablet pen to be able to view the brushes like the way I have them up there. Otherwise, if you have a mouse, you’ll just have to click around blindly until you find the right brush.

+ Mouse users! Play with the opacity and flow of the brush to get the results like a tablet has. =]

+ Save frequently! After you have done a step, SAVE. The best shortcut EVER invented is CTRL + S

+ If you would like to shade your picture on a different layer but don’t know how to get your colouring to stay in the lines use this method. On your flat base colour layer, DON’T LOCK IT. And make sure that everything is coloured inside of your lineart. …OKAY. Instead, press CTRL down on your keyboard and then click the flat colour layer. This will select all of the flat colour. Make a new layer on top of that and you can start shading! This is VERY handy if you want to do multiple shading colours on top of eachother, or if you want to do markings …OR ANYTHING. If you are annoyed by the squiggly lines, hit CTRL + H to hide them.

Then we round the corners of the box using the round selection tool and delete the corners.
Then you must lock the transparent pixel layer so you may apply your gradient colors.
Next use bevel emboss option to give the square depth.
On another layer, create a white circle and take the transparency down and position it on the left corner of the box to give it the glass affect.

Do another little glass with higher transparency and smaller circle and place it within the first one.

This tutorial will focus directly on creating Windows Vista looking orbs. Also, the PSD source file can be downloaded for your viewing pleasure.

Step 1

Create new image 300 x 300 pixels with a white background.

Step 2

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N
Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. Circle or Orb

Step 3

Now we are going to create the base for the orb.
Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and draw a circle in the newly created layer. Remember when you are creating your circle hold down SHIFT while dragging as it will keep the circle in perspective.

Step 4

From the colour palette select colour #276412
Select the Gradient tool as shown below and then select the gradient editor.

Step 5

Change the colour of the transparency end to #B6F039 and increase the opacity to 100%
You should now have bar that looks like the following.

Step 6

Fill the circle with linear gradient by dragging from top to bottom.

Step 7

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N

Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful e.g. bottom glow.

Select the Gradient Tool and the select Radial Gradient.

Select the gradient tool and prepare a white to transparent gradient.

Drag from bottom to top to fill the selected area with gradient.

Go to Select Filter>Blur>Motion blur and enter 1 for blur distance and 90 for angle.

Go to Select Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur and enter 18 for blur radius.

Set Layer Opacity to 88%.

Move your Layer object till it appears to be in the correct position.

Ctrl + Left click the Circle layer to make a selection.

Go to Select > Inverse Then press delete to get rid of anything that could be seen overlapping onto the white background.

Make sure ‘bottom highlight’ layer is selected and press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete the shape area outside the orb.

Ctrl + D to deselect.

Step 8

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N.

Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. top glow.

Ctrl + Left click the Circle layer to make a selection, go to Select>Modify>Contract and type 6 in the input box.

Change the colour Palette to white (Foreground).

Select the gradient tool and prepare a white to transparent gradient.

Drag from top to bottom to fill the selected area with gradient.

Go to Select > Inverse, Click the Bottom Layer and press delete. This will remove a little section from bottom layer. Press Ctrl+D to deselect.

That is basis for creating a Look a Like Orb.

Step 9

Create a new layer by clicking Layer > New > Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N

Give the layer a name, preferably something meaningful E.g. Windows Logo

Open the Vista logo or whatever you can find to fit.

Select > All

Go to your orb creation, on the newly created layer .

Go to Edit > Paste

Use the free transform feature to increase or decrease the size so it will fit your image.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels. This will make the Logo stand out a little better.

Double click the Logo Layer for Layer Style Properties

Select > Drop Shadow > multiply > 30% Opacity and set Size 15px.

I also adjusted the Brightness/Contrast of the Circle Layer to make the green a little darker for better result.

Works with other colours as well. So play with the colours that you see are worthwhile.

You can also add a drop shadow as well.

Cool Photoshop Splat or splatter effect tutorial

In this tutorial, I’ll tell you how to create a pseudo surround effect using just Photoshop tools.

Ok, lets’ go! Start with creating new document 500×500 pixels. Fill the background with a linear gradient using the color #2d120b and #532803.

After that I would like to add some pattern to the background to make the text effect more evident. Get out the Rectangle Tool and create white line as on my picture you can see below.

Use Ctrl+T to rotate this line. Hold the Shift button to rotate the line exactly 45 degrees.

After that duplicate this layer more times and move left and right to create the same grid as on my screenshot.

Then mess with the layer mode & opacity/fill. I tried Overlay with opacity of 25%.

Duplicate this layer with Ctrl+J and flip horizontal with Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.

Now, start with creating pseudo surround effect. Get out the Custom Shape Tool and find some appropriate shape from the palette:

You can download this shape from here if you don’t have it. Use the color #998900.

After that rasterize shape with Layer > Rasterize > Shape and set fill opacity up to 40%. Then apply Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, and Stroke layer styles to this layer:

Ok, select the Burn Tool (Brush: 200 px, Range: Shadows, Exposure: 50%) and make a little burn work in the bottom of the shape.

Looks better then before, isn’t it? Next up is the shine effect. Use Select > Load Selection to select the shape and then apply Select > Modify > Contract to reduce selected area about 2 pixels.

Ok, now I would like to cut away unnecessary part of selection. For this use Elliptical Marquee Tool, hold Alt+Shift and cut away the part of selection.

Then fill selected area with white to transparent gradient on the new layer.

Remove selection with Ctrl+D and change opacity to 50% for this layer.

Add more glares to other parts of shape in the same way.

Move to the last step of the tutorial. Move under the shape layer and let’s add some text to demonstrate our effect more. Get out the Horizontal Type Tool and write out something like ‘Splatter World’ using color of #d2af72. The font that I’ll just be using for this tutorial called BellCent BdList BT.

I’m sorry but this tutorial is done! Feel free to experiment and you will get the best results!

Simplicity is the key to beautiful web layouts. Learn how to draw a beautiful navigation bar in Photoshop.

Preview of Final Results

Clean White Navigation Bar Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1

To start off with, create a new document, for the purpose of this tutorial I have chosen 500 by 200 pixels. Fill the background with a radial gradient from a medium-dark grey to a darker grey. You can do this by selecting the gradient tool from the tool box and setting it to radial. Set your foreground colour to #45443f and your background colour to #31302c. Left click in the middle of the document, drag to the right and release.

Step 2

Create a new layer (Layer > New > Layer) and select the rectangular marquee tool. Make a fixed size selection of 440 by 50 pixels in the middle of your document.

Step 3

Fill the selection with a linear gradient from #f4f4f4 at the top to #d9d9d9 at the bottom.

Step 4

We are now going to be applying a couple of layer styles to this layer.

Layer > Layer Styles > Drop Shadow

Layer > Layer Styles > Outer Glow

Result:

Step 5

Now using the text tool add in some text links. The font settings I’ve used are Verdana, Regular, 13 pt, Sharp, #686868 (and #ac0000 for a hover effect).

Step 6

Lastly, we are going to be adding some dividers between the links. Firstly, create a new layer and select the rectangular marquee tool again. Make a selection of 1 by 50 pixels between the first two links. Fill (Edit > Fill) the selection with the color #b4b4b4.

Step 7

Now move the selection across to the right by one pixel (left arrow key on your keyboard). Fill this selection with the color #d9d9d9.

Step 8

Duplicate this layer and move the duplicate layer along to the right so it is between the next two links (hold down the shift key while moving the divider to the right to keep it in-line. Repeat this process for the rest of the links and you are finished. I’ve also lowered the opacity of the layers by 50% so they don’t stand out so much – but that’s up to you
